All my eggs in one basket – bad idea!

Yep, we all know: it is never a good idea to have all needed items or services provided by only one source. Sometimes, even though we should know better, we still do things that are not in our own best interests. Enter Verizon FiOS. For those who may not have this service in their area, FiOS is a fiber optics delivery system for phone, TV and Internet service.  The Internet is blazing fast with FiOS, the TV reception is great and the phone works. What more could we ask for? How about service? Service seems to be a thing...

Cows that don’t moo – Sea Cows

Manatees, also known as sea cows, live only in Florida and even here their future is uncertain. The manatee population has steadily declined due to the loss of suitable habitat and pollution. The big mammals live in the water, but they need to surface to breath every four minutes or so. When they are sleeping they rise slowly to the surface about once per half hour for a breath. They spend most of their day grazing on aquatic plants, often chomping down up to one hundred pounds a day. Big adults can weigh up to a ton and reach...

It was one of the things we never even thought about, as we planned our exodus from the cold of Pennsylvania. Christmas has always been a big deal in our family. In fact, we even closed our business between Christmas and New Years, so we could have lots of time for family and friends. We did all of the normal things northern residents do, trudged out in the snow to go shopping, endured the cold while stringing up the lights on the...

Another day, another gator.

Most new Floridians find alligators fascinating. I have lived in Florida for over twelve years and I still love to see them in the wild. When the night time temperatures dip, and the gators need to warm up, there are many opportunities to take photos of the critters. I do have a pretty long telephoto lens for my camera; I’m not quite crazy enough to get super close to one of these big guys. I was about 15 feet away from this alligator when I made this image. I didn’t just rush up on him and start taking photos;...
